Our Top Tips For This Christmas

Here are some tips from us on how to have an Eco/Fair Trade friendly Christmas:

  • Need stocking fillers for kids?  Instead of buying plastic toys and gifts, why not take a look at some of the lovely Fair Trade products on offer. From cotton pencil cases and bags to wooden toys and puzzles, they’re sure to be a hit, when your kids open them on Christmas morning!

 Please adopt me!

  • Struggling to know what to buy that certain someone who has everything?  Then how about buying them a Bengali Tiger, a Lion, elephant or a Mountain Gorilla? There are a number of websites (below) that offer annual adoptions of a variety of animals. You’ll be helping to protect these wonderful creatures from extinction through poaching, deforestation and damage to their habitats.
  • Like chocolate? Well now you can eat it with a clear conscience.  There are many types of Fair Trade chocs that you can buy online and on the high street, made in countries such as Peru, Ghana and many more…

  • Like keeping a journal?  There are many Fair Trade co-operatives that produce lovely handmade leather or fabric bound books, so instead of buying a mass produced notebook, you can write your memoirs on something that has been lovingly produced by a small group of people in poorer communities.

  • Finally, don’t forget the Christmas tree! There really isn’t anything quite like the look and smell of a real spruce pine! And contrary to believe buying a real Christmas tree is more environmentally friendly than buying a fake one, especially if you go for one in a pot that you can re-plant and use for years to come!

WFTO’ 10 Fair Trade Principles

We at Planetgift.co.uk believe that Fair Trade is one of the best ways to help small producers improve their lives. Take a look at the Fair Trade principles in the link below and let us know what you think. And why not share these principles with your friends!

WFTO – The 10 principles of Fair Trade

Principle One: Creating Opportunities for Economically Disadvantaged Producers.

Principle Two: Transparency and Accountability

Principle Three: Fair Trading Practices

Principle Four:   Payment of a Fair Price

Principle Five:  Ensuring no Child Labor and Forced Labor

Principle Six:  Commitment to Non Discrimination, Gender Equity and Freedom of Association

Principle Seven:  Ensuring Good Working Conditions

Principle Eight:  Providing Capacity Building

Principle Nine:  Promoting Fair Trade

Principle Ten: Respect for the Environment

© 2011 WFTO

Did you know that the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO) initiate the ‘Fairtrade Minimum Price’ that ensures that all farmers and producers get a fair price for the sustainable production of their traded goods (FLO: Annual Report, 2010), which should increase their business profitability and their individual income.

WFTO also aims to control and improve the work labour standards, for example: a safer work place with a fair and honest wage along with no Child labour, slavery or forced labour! (See WFTO, 2010).

World Fair Trade Organisation is not only concerned about the people in the industry, it also addresses major global challenges, such as: accelerating climate change and the degradation of environmental conditions (Sachs, 2008).

Many other big challenges are highlighted as a priority, such as genetically modified organisms, the use of chemicals fertilisers, water shortage which largely impacts on our agriculture, waste management and deforestation…

The Conclusion:

Well, the Fair Trade principle is much more than buying and selling products. It’s all about our eco system and the people who benefits from it! “Fair trade is not just about the money, it’s mainly about people’s attitude towards consumerism; by  following the Fair Trade principles we are helping ourselves, the planet and turn our world into a better place.

Matthew Nd’enda the unit manager of the Iriaini plantation in Africa said “[Creates more and better things, Bridges have been built, leaf collection centres upgraded and a centre for orphaned children has been created"].

That’s the message WFTO and all Fair Trade business primarily want to get across! Remember that, we are the doers of our future! If you follow bad habits or purchase poor quality products you will be getting and promoting bad things for everyone!

We welcome your honest comments!

What’s Fair Trade and Why?

What’s Fair trade?

Ok so most of us have heard the term Fair trade, but what does it actually mean? Fair trade  is all about creating better working environments and wages for producers in some of the worlds poorest countries.

So why should I choose Fair trade products?

Fair trade products come direct from trusted sources called cooperatives or from small associations around the world, to you the customer without passing trough wholesalers or distributors.

This means that the families or producers in developing countries make a better living. Buy choosing Fair trade you are directly helping to protect workers rights and the environment they work in. You are also helping them receive a fair wage for their hard work.

If I buy Fair trade will it really make a difference?

Yes! It’s a win-win situation, you benefit from getting a beautiful product, happy in the knowledge that someone somewhere is working under the right conditions and getting paid a decent wage.

Even if you don’t make a purchase today, why not spread the word amongst your friends about Fair trade., Your voice will help improve the lives of many people in poorer parts of the world.  And remember, there are so many other Fair trade products, not just gifts.  From yummy chocolate to coffee and tea, there’s never been a better time to switch to Fair trade!
