Did you know that the World Fair Trade Organisation (WFTO) initiate the ‘Fairtrade Minimum Price’ that ensures that all farmers and producers get a fair price for the sustainable production of their traded goods (FLO: Annual Report, 2010), which should increase their business profitability and their individual income.
WFTO also aims to control and improve the work labour standards, for example: a safer work place with a fair and honest wage along with no Child labour, slavery or forced labour! (See WFTO, 2010).
World Fair Trade Organisation is not only concerned about the people in the industry, it also addresses major global challenges, such as: accelerating climate change and the degradation of environmental conditions (Sachs, 2008).
Many other big challenges are highlighted as a priority, such as genetically modified organisms, the use of chemicals fertilisers, water shortage which largely impacts on our agriculture, waste management and deforestation…
The Conclusion:
Well, the Fair Trade principle is much more than buying and selling products. It’s all about our eco system and the people who benefits from it! “Fair trade is not just about the money, it’s mainly about people’s attitude towards consumerism; by following the Fair Trade principles we are helping ourselves, the planet and turn our world into a better place.
Matthew Nd’enda the unit manager of the Iriaini plantation in Africa said “[Creates more and better things, Bridges have been built, leaf collection centres upgraded and a centre for orphaned children has been created"].
That’s the message WFTO and all Fair Trade business primarily want to get across! Remember that, we are the doers of our future! If you follow bad habits or purchase poor quality products you will be getting and promoting bad things for everyone!
We welcome your honest comments!
